Edison’s boys’ basketball team continued its trend of bad game Friday night-good game Saturday night as the Chargers shot 50 percent from the field in man-handling host St. Paul 54-40 Saturday at the convocation center.
It was the second straight Saturday night win by Chris Ceccoli’s over a Norwalk team.
“That the best we have played all year in our half court offense,” Ceccoli said. “Patience was the key. We made the extra pass tonight, reversing the basketball nicely until someone got the open look. Defensive breakdowns by St. Paul are hard to come by because they have so many great athletes, all with good quickness.”
The combined perimeter shooting of Coltyn Grant and Zach Yovanov along with the physical inside game of Taylor Emody and Ryan Reber quickly got the Chargers an early 12-6 advantage. Reber’s second straight goal and a 12-foot runner by Yovanov pushed Edison’s advantage to double-digits at 16-6 six minutes into the game.
It was 18-6 at the first break with the winners showing sparkling 8-of-14 floor shooting numbers over that first eight minutes.
Even when Emody departed with three fouls early in the second quarter, Edison managed to continue to increase its advantage.
Mike Yost took up some of the slack with a pair of goals as the Chargers (8-7 overall) got scoring from five players in advancing their advantage to 31-14 at the intermission.
Reber then took over in the third period, scoring eight of his teams 15 points as Edison continued to pull away, 46-24 at the end of three.
St. Paul (5-8) would get all of its 16 fourth-quarter points from its bench.
Jared Fries paced that group with six points as the Flyers went 7-of-14.
Reber paced the Chargers with 17 points while Grant had 11 and Yovanov 10.
Edison converted 10-of-15 free throws with 31 rebounds and 17 turnovers. Yovanov grabbed six rebounds and Brandon Tomson added five.
Eric Schwieterman led St. Paul with nine points and six of his team’s 23 boards. The Flyers were 16-of-51 from the floor and 5-of-14 from the stripe. On the positive side, St. Paul turned the ball over just nine times.
“The Western game apparently took a lot out of us because I thought we came out flat and Edison jumped on that to build a lead we could not threaten,” Flyers coach Mike Smith said. “Edison shot the ball well in that first half despite what I thought was a decent defensive effort on our part. It seemed like everything they did worked. On the offensive end, we again struggled to keep up.
“I did like the intensity of the bench in that last quarter,” the coach added. “That’s a good sign.”
St. Paul goes to Mapleton Friday night for a Firelands Conference contest, while the Chargers host Margaretta the same night in Sandusky Bay Conference play.
