PLYMOUTH — Behind an inspired fourth quarter, the St. Paul Lady Flyers stunned the Plymouth Big Red 56-54 on Thursday night in Firelands Conference girls’ basketball play at Plymouth High School.
St. Paul trailed 44-32 entering the fourth quarter, but benefited from big baskets by Audrey Badovick, Taylor Brown, Kaylee Bundschuh and Allison Spence to out-score the hosts 24-10 in that final quarter to pull out the win.
The Lady Flyers are now 9-6 overall and 7-5 in the FC, while Plymouth fell to 12-3 and 9-2.
“We started knocking down some shots,” St. Paul coach Jeremy Bliss said about the fourth-quarter turnaround. “We’re in good condition and picked up the defensive intensity in the fourth quarter and started getting after it. This was a total team effort. Our girls just need to have the confidence and we can do it. I’m not scared of anyone in our district.”
Spence’s six points helped the Lady Flyer cause.
“Allie Spence is a good ball player,” Bliss said. “She’s finally getting comfortable.”
Plymouth was hampered by Bre McVey’s foul trouble.
“Hats off to Plymouth,” Bliss said. “Coach (Scott) Speicher and I have the same philosophy. Let’s go play. McVey’s foul trouble helped us.”
Badovick scored 15 points to lead the Lady Flyers, while Bundschuh and Brown each scored 14.
Plymouth led 17-7 after one, 30-20 at the half and 44-32 after three, but it wasn’t to be for the Big Red.
“Turnovers hurt us,” Speicher said about the 19 miscues Plymouth committed. “We’ve got to take care of the basketball. There were a lot of little things we didn’t do right. But I am the coach and all losses are on me.”
Speicher wasn’t using McVey’s foul difficulties as an excuse.
“It didn’t help, but we’re deep enough we should be able to withstand those things,” he said. “We got off to a better start tonight, but then didn’t finish well. We didn’t knock down shots and didn’t shoot well from the free-throw line. We’ll address that in practice.”
Plymouth hosts Mansfield St. Peter on Saturday in a game that could determine the No. 1 seed at the Galion sectional.
“We’ll come back Saturday refocused and ready to play,” Speicher said. “It’s a big game for us.”
McVey paced the Big Red with 18 points. Sarah Shirey added 12 points, Nicole Lyons scored eight and Whitney Jacobs netted seven.
Plymouth won the battle of the boards, 25-16.
The Big Red shot 23-of-50 from the field and 6-of-15 from the line. The Flyers were 22-of-46 and 5-of-8.
St. Paul goes to Tiffin Calvert on Saturday and then comes back to host Edison on Tuesday.
“I’m hoping we can see Plymouth again in the districts,” Bliss said. “We’ll see what happens.”
