The St. Paul Lady Flyers turned up the defensive pressure in the second half Thursday night at the convocation center and cruised to a 58-28 Firelands Conference win over the Monroeville Lady Eagles.
The Lady Flyers out-scored Monroeville 20-5 in the third and 15-6 in the fourth to pull away for the win.
St. Paul had led just 23-17 at the half.
The Lady Flyers improved to 10-6 overall and 8-5 in the FC, while the Eagles now stand at 1-17 and 1-11.
St. Paul coach Jeremy Bliss talked about the slow first half.
“I think not having a regular week is what hurt,” he said. “We didn’t have a lot of intensity in the first half. We were working hard, but especially on the defensive end didn’t have intensity.
“We talked at the half about stepping it up,” Bliss added.
The Flyers used a 1-2-2 press in the second half, ultimately forcing 32 Eagle turnovers.
“I’m proud of the girls,” Bliss said. “They played a great second half.”
Bliss was all smiles when talking about the play of Allison Spence, who has transitioned the past two weeks from a jayvee player to a full-time varsity contributor.
“I think she feels comfortable at that speed,” Bliss said. “She had some good minutes last week against St. Peter’s and Plymouth and she knows we have a lot of confidence in her.”
Spence scored seven Thursday.
Audrey Badovick and Taylor Brown each netted 12 points for St. Paul, while Kaylee Bundschuh added nine.
The Flyers grabbed 31 rebounds to 14 for Monroeville.
St. Paul was 23-of-56 from the floor, which included 6-of-19 three-pointers.
The Lady Flyers were 6-of-12 from the line.
The Eagles shot 9-of-27 for the game and 6-of-8 from the free-throw line.
“They put on full-court pressure in the second half and rattled us and that’s when they were able to extend the lead,” Monroeville coach Matt Tyler said. “Early, Madison Quillen was able to knock down some shots.”
Quillen finished the game with 11 points, which included three triples.
“We didn’t get as many looks inside as we’d like,” Tyler said. “And Allison Seifker had foul trouble early and didn’t get into a rhythm.”
Carla Schaffer added nine points for Monroeville.
Monroeville, 1-17 and 1-11, goes to New London on Saturday in a makeup game and then turns around and plays the Ladycats again Thursday at home.“Yeah, we have New London back to back,” Tyler said. “They like to pressure and push the ball up the court. It’s going to be a good test.”
St. Paul has all kinds of games next week.
The Flyers host Edison on Monday, Sandusky St. Mary on Tuesday, Ashland Crestview on Thursday and travel to Tiffin Calvert on Saturday.
“The thing I like is every one of those teams will show us something different,” Bliss said.
