MONROEVILLE — The Monroeville Eagles put it all together Monday night, crushing the Crestview Cougars 79-49 in Firelands Conference boys’ basketball action.
The Eagles will take an 8-11 overall, 5-8 in the FC record into Friday’s home finale against New London.
The Cougars dropped to 10-8 and 6-6. Crestview goes to New London on Wednesday and St. Paul on Friday.
Crestview actually led 14-6 early on in Monday’s contest before the Eagles closed the first quarter with a 10-1 run.
The second quarter was all Monroeville, as the hosts out-scored the visitors 28-10.
Eleven Eagles cracked the scoring column, led by Ryan Stower’s 21 points. Cory Long added 13 points, while Eric Leber chipped in nine.
“Our defense was just solid again,” Monroeville coach Zac Reer said. “Our last four or five games we have defended well.
“We were also able to get out and go tonight and get a lot of transition baskets,” Reer added. “I liked their energy tonight. This was a good team win.”
The Eagles shot a red-hot 31-of-46 from the floor.
“It helps when you make shots,” Reer said.
Reer said this might have been the best the Eagles have played this season.
“It’s right up there,” he said. “Just a solid, solid effort.”
Stower talked a bit after the game about the big win.
“I thought we worked well together as a team,” the junior said. “And the coaching staff’s game plan was also a big factor. As long as we take care of the little things, we should be OK in the long run.”
The Eagles grabbed 30 rebounds, had 14 turnovers, made 11-of-13 four shots and were 6-of-14 from beyond the 3-point arc.
The Cougars were 20-of-60 from the field, 4-of-11 at the line, had 25 rebounds and 10 miscues.
Kelvin Stimpert scored 12 points to pace Crestview. Ethan Copley added 10 points and Matt Hall had eight.
“I dont think our kids are playing with very much confidence right now,” Crestview coach John Kurtz said. “In the last two games, when things have gone bad, they really go bad.
“Defensively tonight, we were just terrible,” he added. “Our defense was absolutely horrendous. Now, we are reacting to what they are doing and are a step slow.”
The Eagles won the junior varsity game, 62-53. Sophomore Ben Bercheck scored 30 points for the Eagles.
